Cognitive Neurology at NIMHANS

The Cognitive Neurology team at NIMHANS offers specialized, holistic care for individuals with dementia and memory problems, supporting patients and caregivers from diagnosis through ongoing management. We leverage state-of-the-art diagnostics like PET-MRI and biomarker analysis for early and accurate identification, followed by personalized treatment that combines tailored pharmacological therapies with essential multidisciplinary rehabilitation (including speech, physical, and occupational therapy). A major emphasis is also placed on specialized cognitive stimulation therapy and providing comprehensive education and support to families to empower them in the care of their loved ones.

Dementia is a term used to describe problems with memory, thinking, and behavior that are serious enough to affect a person’s everyday life. People with dementia may find it difficult to remember things, solve problems, speak clearly, or do daily activities like cooking or paying bills. Dementia is not a normal part of aging, but it is more common in older adults. There are different types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s disease being the most common. Dementia can change how a person feels or acts, and these changes can be difficult for both the person and their loved ones. With the right care, support, and treatment, people with dementia can still enjoy meaningful moments and a good quality of life.

At NIMHANS, we provide specialized care for people with dementia and memory problems. Our dedicated Cognitive Neurology team is here to support patients and their caregivers every step of the way, from diagnosis to ongoing care. The team is structured to deliver advanced evaluation and holistic management, addressing the multifaceted needs of individuals affected by neurodegenerative conditions.

Patient care begins with a meticulous diagnostic approach, leveraging state-of-the-art imaging modalities such as PET-MRI for in-depth visualization of brain structure and function. These imaging techniques are complemented by biomarker analyses performed on plasma and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which assist in pinpointing the specific causes and stages of dementia, facilitating early and accurate diagnosis.

Once a diagnosis is established, the cognitive neurology team implements a personalized management plan. Pharmacological therapies are tailored to each patient, often incorporating medications to manage symptoms and slow disease progression. Importantly, medication plans are regularly reviewed to maximize efficacy and minimize side effects, acknowledging that many patients may have coexisting health issues. However, medication alone is rarely sufficient; thus, a major emphasis is placed on multidisciplinary rehabilitation. This includes the concerted efforts of speech therapists, who target language and communication difficulties commonly seen in dementia. Physiotherapists are integral in maintaining and improving patients’ motor functions, balance, and mobility, reducing the risk of falls and promoting independence.

Occupational therapists play a critical role by helping patients retain their capacity to perform daily living activities, adapting interventions to individual needs and home environments. Our psychiatric social workers provide essential support, guiding families through the psychosocial challenges of chronic cognitive illness and connecting them with community resources as required. Recognizing the growing evidence supporting non-pharmacological interventions, we specialize in cognitive stimulation therapy and cognitive rehabilitation. Structured group and individual sessions are designed to enhance memory, reasoning, and other cognitive skills through engaging and evidence-based activities, shown to improve quality of life and possibly slow cognitive decline.

We provide guidance and education to families so they feel confident caring for their loved ones. Caregivers can learn tips for managing daily challenges, understanding behaviour changes, and maintaining their own well-being.
